Having moved across very different industries over my career, I've learned to walk into unfamiliar territory, think from first principles, and carry forward everything I've learned rather than starting from zero each time. Every win built my confidence. Every setback became a lesson.

The third belief runs deeper than business metrics for me: purpose has to outlast the paycheck. Sustainable energy to build something new comes from work connected to a cause larger than the profit and loss statement. This shapes how I hire, too. Rather than focusing only on a candidate's track record, I look for desire and drive, because will and motivation matter more than a polished resume.

Aligning Personal Values With Organisational Culture

When people ask how I balance personal values against organisational priorities, I'm direct about it: the two need to be in sync. A mismatch between what a leader believes and what the organisation stands for creates internal friction that eventually shows up in decisions, energy, and culture. My advice is simple: get clear on your own values first, then find an organisation whose values genuinely match them.

I also place responsibility for culture squarely on leadership. The standard a leader holds becomes the standard the entire team works within.

I see three structural shifts transforming our sector.

The Convergence of Screens

Audiences today follow content, not platforms. The old boundary between television and streaming is dissolving. A single story now travels across theatres, TV, digital, social, and short-form video, changing how content is created and distributed from the ground up.

The Always-On Consumer

Where content consumption once happened in a few defined windows, it's now spread across dozens of moments throughout the day: during commutes, while cooking, while scrolling. Brands and platforms have seconds to capture attention, which demands content built for the specific moment and format it appears in.

A Connected Monetisation Economy

India's media market cannot rely on advertising and subscription alone. These two pillars have built a multi-trillion-rupee industry, but I believe platforms need to move into experiential commerce, direct content-to-retail integration, gamified monetisation, and hyper-local commerce built around content communities. The platforms that treat every story, screen, and community as part of one connected revenue system will be the ones that win.

AI in Media: The Trend Every Leader Must Prepare For

When people ask me which emerging trend demands the most urgent attention, I don't hesitate: artificial intelligence.

I see the opportunity as one of integration across the entire value chain, not a single use case. The fundamentals of media, understanding the consumer, creating content, marketing it, and monetising it, haven't changed. What AI changes is the speed and precision of each step. Better consumer intelligence feeds smarter creative decisions, which enable sharper marketing, which in turn drives stronger monetisation, with each part of the chain compounding the others.

On the creative front, I see AI making forms of cinematic storytelling financially viable that were previously too costly or time-consuming to produce. On the consumer side, I want our industry to move past "you liked this, here's more of the same" recommendation logic and instead use AI to understand the deeper reasons behind what audiences love, opening new content worlds rather than narrowing them further.

What excites me most is speed. AI can help a business understand a consumer within minutes rather than over weeks of accumulated data. Leaders who treat AI as a system running through every part of the business, rather than a cost-cutting line item, will unlock opportunities that others overlook entirely.

Advice for the Next Generation of Leaders

Reflecting on more than two and a half decades across different industries, here are three pieces of advice I'd offer to leaders building for the long term.

Start With Self-Discovery

Understanding what you're genuinely passionate about, what you're good at, and where you can make an impact matters more than any single career move. I often point to cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle as an example of someone who pursued that exact intersection of passion, capability, and opportunity until he found an irreplaceable space of his own.

Build Missionaries, Not Machinery

Lasting organisations are shaped by leaders who help their people understand why the work matters, not just what needs to get delivered. When people feel genuine purpose, they stop needing to be managed in the traditional sense.

Remember That the Past Doesn't Equal the Future

Give yourself permission to fail, because every failure carries information. Intelligence is table stakes in leadership. Courage, the willingness to act on conviction and keep moving when it would be easier to stop, is what actually sets leaders apart.

Rather than borrowing someone else's quote, I'll leave you with a framework of my own: vision without courage is just a wish, and courage without conviction is just noise. The leaders who define what comes next will be the ones who combine a clear vision, the courage to pursue it, and the conviction to hold the course when circumstances turn against them.
